Fatal Sacramento car crash death of Chad Millward

Investigators have identified all three individuals who were aboard the medical helicopter when it crashed in Sacramento. The fatalities include pilot Chad Millward, flight paramedic Margaret Davis, and flight nurse Suzie Smith, all of whom are receiving critical care.

Chad Millward was a retired California Highway Patrol officer and pilot. According to reports, he was recognized for his bravery in 2017 when Governor Jerry Brown awarded him a Medal of Valor for actions taken during the Atlas Fire in Napa County.

A family connection and county official, Corkey Harmon, described Suzie Smith’s condition as critical. She stated that Smith suffered multiple severe injuries, including broken ribs, pelvic fractures, leg injuries, and significant brain swelling.

Eyewitness accounts and mobile phone recordings show the helicopter impact. Authorities emphasized that no one on the nearby road was harmed despite the severe crash location directly on Highway 50.

The incident began with the helicopter departing a medical facility after completing a patient transport. Shortly after 7 p.m., the aircraft encountered difficulties and crashed. Fire Department officials expressed amazement that the crash resulted in no injuries to highway users.
