Fatal train collision death of Al Wheeler, 55, of Sandwich, DeKalb County
DeKalb County officials have confirmed the identity of a man killed when an Amtrak train hit him in Sandwich. A news release from the coroner’s office announced the identification.
Preliminary findings from DeKalb County Coroner’s Office indicate Al Wheeler was crossing train tracks when he was struck by an eastbound Amtrak train on October 9. He was pronounced dead at the scene that day.
According to a statement from Sandwich Police, emergency dispatchers received a report around 8:57 p.m. on October 9 about a pedestrian being hit by a train near the Latham Street and Center Street intersection. Law enforcement confirmed there were no signs of wrongdoing.
The coroner’s office has officially ruled Al Wheeler’s death an accident. Multiple agencies, including the Amtrak Police Department, are continuing their investigation into the incident.
