Investigators report that a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Deputy fatally shot Matherson on Wednesday following a pursuit. The chase began in Hale County and crossed into Tuscaloosa County shortly before 2 a.m. It concluded near a business on Bridge Avenue and 5th Street in Northport.
According to law enforcement sources, Matherson exited his vehicle during the pursuit and continued to fire at officers. In response, deputies returned fire, resulting in his death.
Captain Marty Sellers, with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, commented on the incident. He stated that officers handled the situation with professionalism and that the investigation currently indicates the use of force was justified. He added, “Everything will be presented to the Tuscaloosa County grand jury, as is standard procedure for cases like this.”
Deputies assigned to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit noted Matherson had a history of violent offenses. Records from Alacourt indicate he faced charges including attempted murder in Tuscalosa County in 2018. His probation was revoked in 2024. Additionally, Hale County authorities reported multiple domestic violence cases were filed against him in that jurisdiction during 2024.
The pursuit, as Captain Marty Sellers explained, originated from a domestic disturbance incident in Hale County. District Attorney Hayes Webb announced the case would proceed through standard channels. He said the matter will be reviewed by a grand jury after the investigation is complete, typically within two to four weeks following receipt of the necessary documentation. Webb also commended the transparency and cooperation among law enforcement agencies involved in the incident.
