Wednesday morning arrived with a tragic fire in Torrington that claimed a life. The Torrington Fire Department received an emergency call early in the day and dispatched units to Marvin Street.
Upon arrival, the responding firefighters encountered intense smoke and active flames emanating from the building. Crews immediately went to work containing the blaze and conducting a careful search of the interior.
Inside the residence, they discovered a woman, later confirmed by city police to be Michele Cullen, a 52-year-old resident. Regrettably, a domestic animal was also killed in the incident, according to the fire department’s statement.
The incident is under investigation by the Torrington Fire Marshal’s Office, the local police, and the state fire marshal. These agencies are examining the fire’s origin and cause.
Additional support came from regional services including Trinity EMS, as well as the Drakeville and Harwinton Westside Fire Departments.
News of the death stunned the neighborhood, where Cullen was well-known. Residents remember her as a cheerful and resilient person, despite facing health challenges. Despite using a wheelchair, she was described as active and friendly, often sharing treats with her neighbors. Her family, including her husband and son, are noted as survivors.
