DeWayne O’Neil Smith dies in fatal Cleveland car crash
Fatal Cleveland car crash death of DeWayne O’Neil Smith
A 31-year-old Lakemont resident named DeWayne O’Neil Smith died Thursday morning in a serious vehicle collision in Cleveland. This fatal accident occurred near Cleveland Highway and Clarks Bridge Road in White County.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office stated that 38-year-old Angelica Marisol Vilchis-Cruz, who was driving a GMC Sierra, crossed into the northbound traffic lanes while drowsy. This driver lost consciousness behind the wheel. The driver struck a Ford Explorer, carrying DeWayne O’Neil Smith, just before 7:45 a.m. Smith was rescued from his vehicle.
First responders transported the injured man to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Despite these efforts, DeWayne O’Neil Smith was pronounced dead shortly before 9 a.m. at the hospital.
Angelica Marisol Vilchis-Cruz is being held accountable for charges including first-degree vehicular homicide.
