Mesa police were dispatched early Thursday morning, October 16th, to a care facility for the elderly located in Mesa, Arizona, where reports indicated two residents had been shot and were not breathing. This information was released by the Mesa Police Department.

Staff at the facility, situated in the 1000 block of W. Mendoza Avenue, informed authorities that a male resident, identified as 92-year-old Jerome Woolums, might have shot himself. When officers arrived shortly after 4 a.m. local time, they found both Jerome and his wife, 93-year-old Katharine Woolums, in a bedroom. Both had been shot in the head.

According to police, Jerome, who was found holding a gun and had a possible self-inflicted wound, was pronounced dead at the scene. When Katharine was discovered, she showed signs of life, prompting first responders from Mesa Fire and Medical to provide emergency treatment. She was transported to a hospital with severe injuries. However, the 93-year-old woman later passed away in the hospital.
