Fatal Mahoning County car crash death of Nicholas P. Cayton

Officials reported that an Ohio state trooper died following a collision on State Route 11. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the 40-year-old Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton was killed when struck fatally. The incident occurred around 11:52 a.m. Thursday in Mahoning County.

The state patrol stated that Cayton was dispatched to address reports of a disabled semitruck stopped in the right lane. He was seated in his police cruiser with emergency lights activated when a truck collided with the rear of his vehicle.

Further details indicate that the cruiser subsequently impacted the disabled semitruck and also struck its driver, Jesus Herrera Vasquez, who was outside the vehicle. Cayton was pronounced deceased at the accident scene. The injured semitruck driver, Jesus Herrera Vasquez, was airlifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The driver of the rear-ending truck, identified as Ryan Rach, sustained no injuries. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that the crash is currently under investigation.
