Fatal southeast Louisville shooting death of Darryl Burnett Jr.
Initial reports from Sunday indicated a deadly shooting incident occurred near Brentlinger Park Drive in southeast Louisville. Police subsequently identified the victim as Darryl Burnett Jr., a 30-year-old man.
Law enforcement authorities arrested two individuals connected to the incident later that day. The suspects were identified as Darrel Burnett, aged 37, and Kiaira Paige, aged 36. These two men were formally charged in connection with the fatal shooting.
The Jefferson County Coroner officially confirmed the identity of the deceased young man as Darryl Burnett Jr. Following the recovery of the body, detectives from the homicide division apprehended the two suspects.
Around 2:55 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a report concerning a shooting in the 1000 block of Brentlinger Park Drive. Upon their arrival, responding officers discovered one male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medical personnel transported the injured individual to the hospital, but despite their best efforts, the victim succumbed to his severe injuries.
Investigators revealed that one suspect confessed to a physical altercation with the deceased before the fatal shooting. Specific details indicated that a handgun was used to fire one shot into the leg of the victim. Additionally, surveillance footage allegedly captured another suspect using a rifle to fire the fatal shot, an incident that the suspect later admitted to.
Residing in the neighborhood described the area as generally peaceful and community-oriented. Mary Kuerzi, a local resident, described her feelings about the incident, noting the area’s quiet nature but expressing profound unease over the violence. “Unsettled for sure. My heart breaks for the kids and the families that live in this neighborhood,” Kuerzi shared, adding her concern about personal safety.
The legal proceedings against the suspects began with charges being filed. Darrel Burnett faces a serious charge of murder. Kiaira Paige was charged with a second-degree assault accusation. Both individuals are scheduled to appear in court on Monday at 9 a.m.
Officials have stated that their ongoing investigation is continuing to gather additional information regarding this tragic event.
