Speaking on behalf of the group, his father, Ted Williams, noted that their faith in God has become their anchor, helping them cope with the tragedy and even find it within themselves to extend compassion to the person responsible for the accident.
Williams’ father expressed deep pride in his son, describing him as a remarkable individual who brought joy and kindness to others. “My son evolved into such a wonderful individual,” Ted Williams shared, his voice trembling as he recalled their son’s positive traits.
Eric Williams’ mother, Suzanne Williams, painted a portrait of a gentle and humorous person, emphasizing his selfless nature. “He was first and foremost a person who brought laughter and warmth to everyone he met,” she said, highlighting his character.
The heartbreaking incident took place on Monday morning when Williams was participating in a group bicycle ride on Pacific Coast Highway, specifically near the intersection with Newland Street. According to reports, a driver collided with him and two other cyclists who were traveling in a bike lane. The impact proved fatal, as Williams was declared dead at the scene.
The other two cyclists involved in the collision were transported to the hospital with serious injuries, including spinal fractures, rib breaks, and a broken ankle, leaving them in recovery. Authorities have since identified the driver, 43-year-old Amber Kristine Calderon of Long Beach, and she is facing multiple felony charges, including hit-and-run causing permanent injury or death and hit-and-run with injury.
A family member, sister Alli Joy Vazquez, spoke openly about the profound pain of the loss but also stressed the importance of forgiveness. “It breaks your heart when someone with a family is gone so abruptly, but we must let go of anger,” she remarked, acknowledging the overwhelming emotions.
