Fatal shooting death of Paul Courtney
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified a man who was killed in a fatal shooting incident inside his home in Parkland during the early part of this month. The victim, Paul Courtney, is reported to be 63 years old.
Court documents from the medical examiner indicate that Mr. Courtney passed away on October 10 due to a shotgun wound to the chest, located in the 400 block of 142nd Street Court South. The death was officially classified as a homicide by authorities.
The son of the deceased, Michael Paul Courtney, who is 41, is currently facing charges related to this incident. According to investigation reports, Michael Courtney’s mother became involved when she heard her son conversing with someone in the upper part of the house. She then inquired of Mr. Courtney about the person he was speaking to. It is reported that shortly after, the woman heard her husband respond with the words, “Are you pointing a gun at me?” before a gunshot was heard from inside the residence.
Prosecutors have filed formal charges against Michael Courtney, including first-degree murder and a second-degree offense for unlawful firearm possession. During legal proceedings, Mr. Courtney has stated he is not guilty of these accusations. He is currently being held at the Pierce County Jail with a bond set at one million dollars.
Prior to this case, Michael Courtney has a history of criminal convictions in Pierce County. Records show he was convicted of third-degree domestic violence assault in 2011 and also of fourth-degree assault and obstructing a law enforcement officer in 2009.
The next scheduled court appearance for Michael Courtney is set to take place on November 13.
