Fatal Long Beach car crash death of Raul Augustin Gallopa
The Los Angeles County coroner has officially identified the man killed in the October incident as Raul Augustin Gallopa, a 35-year-old resident of Long Beach. He succumbed to his injuries on Monday, October 16.
According to reports from the Long Beach Police Department and the county’s medical examiner’s office, Mr. Gallopa was involved in the collision shortly before 8 p.m. on October 6. The accident occurred near the intersection of East Fourth Street and Bonito Avenue.
Initial police accounts indicate Mr. Gallopa was operating his bicycle eastbound on Fourth Street when he attempted to turn left onto Bonito Avenue. It was at this moment that he was struck by a 2021 BMW 330i, which was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed.
Emergency personnel found the cyclist unconscious on the roadway and transported him to a local medical facility. However, his condition was critical, and he ultimately passed away.
The driver of the BMW, identified as 24-year-old Ahkeyajahnique Owens of Long Beach, remained present at the scene following the collision. Police lodged an arrest for suspicion of reckless driving, although it remains uncertain if criminal charges will be formally filed as a result of this incident.
