Fatal St. Helena Parish car crash death of Elijah L. Brumfield
State Police are examining the scene of a multi-car collision on early Sunday morning, October 26th, that resulted in the death of a Baton Rouge man. Authorities reported the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Louisiana Avenue 1045, close to Louisiana Avenue 43. Initial reports indicate Brumfield was operating his vehicle westbound when he crossed the central divider. He then collided head-on with an opposing vehicle traveling eastbound.
Investigators concluded Brumfield was not secured by a seatbelt during the collision and was thrown from his car. Medical personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene. The driver of the other car involved, Travis D. Keller, who is from Slaughter, experienced slight injuries. He chose not to receive medical attention. Troopers assessed Keller later and determined he was under the influence, leading to charges of first-time Driving While Intoxicated and several traffic citation violations.
Keller was released under a court summons but was given over to hospital personnel for care related to his injuries. As part of the continuing probe, officials collected toxicology specimens from both drivers.
