Pete Kostopoulos dies in fatal Hainesville car crash
Fatal Hainesville car crash death of Pete Kostopoulos
The Lake County Coroner’s office announced that Pete Kostopoulos, a 51-year-old resident of Elk Grove Village, was killed when his car was struck by a Metra train on Thursday afternoon in Hainesville.
Following a completed autopsy on Friday, Coroner Jennifer Banek confirmed Kostopoulos’ identity and stated that preliminary findings indicate his death was caused by blunt force trauma resulting from the collision.
According to Battalion Chief Jay VandeBerg from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District, emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:06 p.m. Thursday, where they found a single vehicle demolished after being hit by the train near the Belvidere Road and Centre Drive intersection. VandeBerg noted that the vehicle suffered severe damage, and rescue efforts were immediately initiated.
The Coroner’s office reported that Kostopoulos was crossing the tracks at the time of the incident, which led to the fatal collision with the outbound Metra train.
