Investigators secured Mayo under custody on Thursday evening at a residence located on US-70. He has been formally charged with a felony hit-and-run incident involving death and is currently held at the Johnston County Detention Center pending further legal proceedings.

State officials confirmed that the vehicle—a flatbed truck equipped with a trailer—was discovered impounded shortly after the incident. This particular vehicle, which was transporting a sewer cleaner unit, was located on Highway 70 East in Smith at approximately 10:30 p.m.

A family representative connected to the vehicle provided a statement to the news outlet, disclosing that another individual from their household was operating the truck at the time of the incident.
