Vanessa Ragland dies in fatal Birmingham shooting.

Fatal Birmingham shooting death of Vanessa Ragland.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office officially identified the deceased as Vanessa Ragland, a 36-year-old from Birmingham, who died following a police encounter on Wednesday. Law enforcement personnel responded to a disturbance in the 600 block of Brunson Avenue, where Ragland was pronounced dead later that evening.

Ragland’s family shared information online, revealing that the victim had autism and was shot multiple times during the incident. According to her cousin, who posted updates on Facebook, the chain of events began when a neighbor reported hearing arguments inside the residence.

Chief Michael Pickett issued a brief comment Wednesday evening, but he declined to answer further questions regarding the situation. Ragland was transported to UAB Hospital, arriving shortly before 6:09 p.m., and was declared dead at that time by medical personnel.

The Jefferson County Coroner, Bill Yates, confirmed the findings, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation was subsequently assigned to examine the case thoroughly. No injuries were reported among the officers involved in the incident.
