Fatal Sunshine Coast head-on e-bike crash death of Zeke Hondow

An eight-year-old child, Zeke Hondow, tragically died following a high-speed collision between two electrically powered bicycles on the Sunshine Coast. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, around 3:36 PM, near the intersection of Mountain Creek, close to the Kawana Way and Sunshine Mwy interchanges, while the boy was traveling home from his school. Both e-bikes were traveling in the same direction on a shared pathway.

Despite being transported quickly to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition, Zeke was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The other person involved in the accident, a fifteen-year-old male, chose not to receive medical attention but is voluntarily helping the police with their ongoing investigation. Inspector Jason Overland confirmed that both youths were wearing protective headgear at the time of the collision.

In response to the tragedy, a fundraising page has been set up for the young boy’s family, referred to as “little Zeke,” acknowledging his loss in a “tragic accident.” A female contributor to the initiative shared that this represents a “tough time” for their family. She expressed grief over her cousin’s “little 8yr old son” who has “tragically grown his angel wings.”

Both e-bike units involved have been taken into police possession, and investigations are still underway. Queensland’s Transport Minister, Brent Mickelberg, responded by emphasizing the need for stronger legislation addressing the increasing presence of e-bikes, stating that government levels must “do more.” He noted his personal connection as a parent of an eight-year-old and sympathized deeply with the family’s suffering. Similarly, the state’s Attorney-General, Deb Frecklington, announced plans to collaborate with the premier and Mickelberg to tighten regulations, citing an existing parliamentary inquiry into e-bike safety in Queensland as the reason. She also expressed sympathy for the affected family, calling the event an “absolute tragedy.”
