Joseph Donaldson dies in fatal Makena car crash
Fatal Makena car crash death of Joseph Donaldson
The individual killed when the vehicle involved in the previous fatal collision on Makena Road was identified as Joseph Donaldson. He was 47 years of age and resided in League City, Texas. Maui Police Department sources reported the serious incident happened around 5:35 p.m. on Thursday.
According to those investigating the scene, the 47-year-old person behind the wheel and their 46-year-old female companion were heading south when the car suddenly veered off course. The car struck rocks located on the left side of the shoulder. According to the Maui Police Department, the car then slid over to the other side of the road and collided with additional rocks.
Investigators state the vehicle subsequently became airborne before rolling several times. It finally landed on its roof. The driver was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover and, after medical personnel arrived, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The passenger, who was buckled into their seat, received treatment and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in a critical condition.
The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, investigators reported. The passenger was wearing their seatbelt. Officials are continuing their investigation to determine whether impairment from alcohol or drugs played a role in this accident.
This fatality brings the total number of traffic deaths in Maui County this year to fifteen, compared to thirteen recorded during the same period last year.
