Fatal car crash death of Elmer Gualna-Mez
Athens-Clarke County authorities confirmed the identity of the person killed in the deadly vehicle collision that took place on Sunday at the junction of Highway 29 North and Highway 72. The individual was 22 years old and named Elmer Gualna-Mez.
According to a statement released by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department on Monday, Gualna-Mez did not survive the incident. The driver of the involved vehicle—a 33-year-old man from Hull, Georgia, driving a 2017 Nissan Versa—was apprehended by law enforcement and formally accused of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
This unfortunate event stands as the seventh recorded fatality in the current year and the eighth such incident in Athens-Clarke County overall.
