Elmer Gualna-Mez has died in a car crash in Athens.
This fatal collision occurred at the point where US Highway 29 North meets Highway 72, on the 26th of October.
Athens-Clarke County law enforcement confirmed that the individual operating a 2017 Nissan Versa was a man aged thirty-three from Hull, Georgia. At the time of the incident, this driver was moving north along US Highway 29. His vehicle made contact with a crossing pedestrian, the deceased, who later passed away directly at the crash site.
Officials officially announced the identity of the deceased person as Elmer Gualna-Mez, who was twenty-two years old and a local resident of Athens.
The person driving the Nissan Versa was taken into custody and subsequently faced formal accusations including first-degree homicide involving a vehicle and driving under the influence due to alcohol consumption. However, the police did not make the driver’s personal details public.
This particular accident stands as the seventh recorded fatality from traffic incidents in the Athens-Clarke County region during the year 2025, contributing to a total of eight individual deaths.
