The Jefferson City Police Department provided the identity of the man killed in Saturday’s shooting incident near the Old Navy store. According to an official news release issued by police on Tuesday, 25-year-old Erik Spencer was the individual involved in the fatal shooting.
Individuals claiming to be part of Spencer’s family confirmed his identity to local news affiliate ABC 17, indicating that he was indeed the person who was shot. Information from his social media presence indicates Spencer was an alumnus of Lincoln University.
Law enforcement was dispatched to the location shortly before 8:00 p.m. local time on Saturday. While details surrounding the manner of Spencer’s shooting or the identity of the shooter have not been officially released by the Jefferson City Police, the Tuesday news release stated that investigators have identified the person who fired the weapon.
Furthermore, the police department mentioned that the decision regarding whether to file criminal charges against the shooter is currently under review by the Cole County prosecuting attorney. Therefore, the identity of the shooter is not expected to be disclosed until that decision has been made.
