Investigators have confirmed the identity of the person killed in a serious vehicular accident on Makena Road, close to Oneloa Beach. The deceased has been identified as Joseph Donaldson, a 47-year-old resident of League City, Texas.
According to the Maui Police Department, the fatal crash happened around 5:35 p.m. on Thursday. Sources state that the 47-year-old driver and his 46-year-old female companion were driving south and lost control of their vehicle. The car veered off the road and hit rocks on the left shoulder. Following this impact, the vehicle slid across the road and collided with additional rocks.
Further reports indicate that the car flipped and landed on its roof after becoming airborne. The driver was ejected from the vehicle during the incident and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Meanwhile, the passenger, who was wearing her seatbelt, received medical attention and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in a critical condition.
The authorities are currently examining whether excessive speed and the lack of a seatbelt for the driver contributed to the accident. Additionally, there are ongoing investigations into the potential influence of alcohol or drugs. This event represents the 15th traffic-related fatality in Maui County this year, surpassing the 13 fatalities recorded at the same period last year.
