Officials confirmed yesterday that the individual involved was Owen C. Smith, a nineteen-year-old resident of Lee Center. This information was released by Robert Maciol, who serves as the Oneida County sheriff.
The collision took place late on Sunday afternoon on Steadman Road within the town of Lee, occurring around 8:40 p.m. According to Maciol, Smith was operating the vehicle in a southward direction when he lost command of it. The car subsequently departed the eastern edge of the road and impacted a tree.
Smith was transported to Rome Health Hospital following the incident. Regrettably, his condition deteriorated, leading to his untimely demise at the medical facility.
In their ongoing probe, investigators have concluded that excessive speed was the main contributing factor that led to the unfortunate accident, as stated by Maciol.
