Fatal Lowell car crash death of Derek Witzenman

State law enforcement personnel reported receiving a notification concerning a severe automobile collision on the Lowell Connector. This incident occurred around 1:15 in the morning, forcing authorities to shut down all lanes designated for incoming traffic near Exit 5A until 4:00 AM was reached.

Initial probe suggests that the collision was caused by a driver who was moving in the opposite direction on the road. This individual, identified as Derek Witzenman, who is 29 years old and hails from Woburn, was taken into custody and faced multiple allegations, including driving under the influence of alcohol and operating the vehicle negligently.

Emergency medical services conveyed the driver of the second vehicle, along with a passenger, to Lowell General Hospital for emergency air transport to Boston. Regrettably, the driver passed away due to the injuries sustained. It has not been confirmed whether the passenger received any injuries.

The incident is still being investigated by the state police. Derek Witzenman is anticipated to appear in court for his initial hearing in the Lowell District Court on Wednesday.
