The fatal stabbing occurred in central Fresno around 8 p.m. on October 31st, at the intersection of Griffith and Blackstone avenues.

Fresno police report that surveillance video captured a dispute between Manuel Lopez and Ashton Dejean, 43 years old. This disagreement escalated, leading to Dejean attacking Lopez with a knife. The victim suffered multiple stab wounds. Emergency responders transported him to Community Regional Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators reviewed footage indicating Dejean briefly entered the adjacent Carl’s Jr. restaurant before the stabbing. Deputies arrested Ashton Dejean near the Hotel Fresno shortly after the incident. He is facing charges of murder and resisting arrest.

Fresno Police Lieutenant Brian Valles stated, “It should be noted that our victim, Manuel Lopez, had a very limited criminal background. The person arrested, Ashton Dejean, however, has a prior record including felony convictions for domestic violence and unlawful weapon possession.”

According to available information, both Manuel Lopez and Ashton Dejean resided at a mental health facility. The nature of their relationship is currently unknown. Police have asked anyone with additional information about the case to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 559-498-STOP.
