Fatal South Jordan, Utah shooting death of Alexander Powell – Obituary
Alexander Powell was killed early Saturday morning following a shooting in a residential neighborhood in South Jordan, according to local authorities. Police were called to the area near 11500 South Copperstone Drive shortly after 1:45 a.m. to investigate reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found Powell, 34, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
Court records state that witnesses identified 38-year-old Kevin Charles Scarbourough as the individual who brought the gunman to the home where the shooting occurred. The shooter was later named as 25-year-old Zachary Gage Prescott.
Investigators learned that Scarbourough and Powell were involved in several physical confrontations in the backyard of the residence. Witnesses reported that the dispute was connected to alleged gang-related tensions. After the altercation was broken up, Scarbourough, Powell, and Prescott moved to the front of the house.
According to witness statements, Scarbourough instructed Prescott to shoot Powell. Prescott reportedly hesitated, saying he did not want to go to prison, but after Scarbourough repeated the command, gunshots were fired. Surveillance footage later obtained by police allegedly captured Scarbourough issuing the order.
After being advised of his rights, Scarbourough admitted he was present at the scene and had arrived with Prescott. He told officers that the situation escalated rapidly after he returned from using the bathroom, describing people fleeing the home shortly before his arrest.
Scarbourough was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail.
Police later executed a search warrant Sunday morning at a residence in Duchesne County, where they arrested the second suspect, Zachary Prescott. Authorities confirmed that Prescott was booked on homicide charges, bringing both suspects into custody as the investigation continues.
