Fatal St. Petersburg, Florida car crash death of Izell Shelby – Obituary

Izell Shelby, 31, was killed Saturday night in a violent traffic collision at a major intersection in St. Petersburg, according to police.

Investigators with the St. Petersburg Police Department said the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North and North Frontage Road. An SUV was traveling northbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North and entered the intersection with a green light.

At the same time, Izell Shelby was driving westbound on North Frontage Road at a high speed. Police said Shelby failed to stop for a red light and entered the intersection, where his vehicle struck the SUV.

Emergency responders rushed Shelby to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The driver of the SUV was not reported to have life-threatening injuries. Authorities stated that the investigation determined speed was a significant factor in the crash.
