Fatal Durham, North Carolina shooting death of Malik Whitley Jr. – Obituary

Malik Whitley Jr., a 28-year-old Durham resident, has been identified as the man who lost his life after a shooting at a shopping center in the city Saturday night.

According to the Durham Police Department, officers were dispatched just before 8:20 p.m. to the Village Shopping Center in the 1000 block of North Miami Boulevard following reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they located Malik Whitley Jr. suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Police immediately arranged for Whitley Jr. to be transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries at the hospital.

Investigators said a person of interest was taken in for questioning shortly after the incident, but as of Monday, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Authorities have not released details about what led up to the violence.
