A deadly apartment fire in Fayetteville claimed the life of 35-year-old Porsha Quarles and left a young child fighting for survival, authorities confirmed.

The fire broke out Monday at an apartment building in the 6400 block of Yadkin Road. Firefighters arrived on scene and were able to pull both Quarles and a child from the burning unit. They were rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for emergency treatment.

Officials later confirmed that Quarles died from injuries sustained in the fire. The child, identified as a 1-year-old girl, remains in critical condition.

According to radio traffic reports, a neighbor alerted emergency crews after noticing smoke coming from the apartment. One individual was reportedly located in a second-floor bedroom during the rescue.

Investigators say the cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under active investigation. Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact Fayetteville police or submit an anonymous tip through Cumberland County Crime Stoppers.
