Fatal Lake Charles, Louisiana hit-and-run crash death of Jay Borom – Obituary
Jay Borom, a 64-year-old bicyclist from Lake Charles, died after suffering severe injuries in a hit-and-run crash that occurred late Saturday night. Jay Borom was later pronounced dead after being hospitalized for injuries sustained during the collision.
According to the Lake Charles Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:30 p.m. to the 2100 block of Broad Street following reports of a vehicle striking a bicyclist and fleeing the scene. When officers arrived, they found Borom with multiple broken bones and remained with him until Acadian Ambulance took over medical care.
Borom was initially transported to a local hospital but was later transferred to a Baton Rouge medical facility due to the seriousness of his injuries. Police confirmed on Sunday that Borom had died as a result of those injuries.
While investigating the scene, officers recovered vehicle parts believed to be connected to the crash. Shortly afterward, the suspected driver, identified as 20-year-old Mathew Alan Vipond of Lake Charles, contacted police and admitted involvement in the incident.
After speaking with investigators, Vipond was arrested and charged with first-degree vehicular negligent injuring, hit-and-run driving involving death or serious bodily injury, and underage operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The Lake Charles Police Department Traffic Division continues to investigate the crash. Authorities are asking anyone with additional information to contact the department or submit tips anonymously through the Lake Charles Police Department app.
