Fatal Waterbury condominium fire death of Jeffrey Bernier – Obituary

Jeffrey Bernier, 72, died Tuesday morning following a fire at a condominium on the 100 block of Mark Lane in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Fire officials reported that crews arrived around 6:22 a.m. to find heavy flames and quickly extinguished the blaze. Once the fire was under control, responders discovered Bernier deceased on the first floor. His wife was in the home at the time but escaped safely after being alerted by fire detectors. Investigators noted that three oxygen tanks in the unit may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

No other residents or first responders were injured. Adjacent units were rendered uninhabitable, and the American Red Cross has provided support for displaced residents. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
