Brentwood authorities identified 43-year-old Romaine Morgan of Stockton as the man who died during a police encounter on Christmas Eve.

According to police, the incident began when officers stopped Morgan on suspicion of driving under the influence on Dec. 24. During the stop, officers determined there was probable cause to search his vehicle, where they discovered a loaded high-powered rifle without a serial number. Due to his prior felony convictions, which included armed robbery, Morgan was legally barred from possessing firearms.
