Fatal Columbus, Nebraska crash death of Chance Becker – Obituary

Chance Becker, 32, of Utica, was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Highway 81 just west of Columbus on Christmas Eve. Deputies with the Platte County Sheriff’s Office reported that Becker had pulled over his 2001 Dodge pickup, which was towing a 1999 Carry-On trailer, to inspect the trailer when he was struck by another northbound pickup.

Becker was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later identified the driver of the striking vehicle as an 84-year-old man from Columbus, who has not been cited. Weather conditions at the time included dense fog and light drizzle, and neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have played a role.

The Nebraska State Patrol assisted with a reconstruction of the accident, and the roadway was closed for approximately five hours during the investigation. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Witnesses with information are urged to contact local authorities or Crime Stoppers.
