Mexico’s Navy Secretariat confirmed that 73-year-old Hilda Alcántara died as a result of injuries sustained in the derailment of the Interoceanic Train on December 28, bringing the total number of fatalities to 14. Alcántara had been receiving specialized medical treatment, including emergency surgery, before her death.
The crash, which took place in Oaxaca, initially killed 13 people at the scene and left 98 others injured, with 44 hospitalized. Two of the victims were minors aged 6 and 15, while the rest were adults over the age of 45.
The Interoceanic Train was carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members when it derailed around 9:30 a.m., causing four of the railcars to leave the tracks. As of January 1, five individuals remained hospitalized, though two had already been discharged. The train, which links the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, was designed as an alternative to the Panama Canal for freight transport.
