Fatal Waterbury condo fire death of Jeffery Bernier – Obituary

Jeffery Bernier, 72, lost his life Tuesday morning in a condo blaze in Waterbury, despite his wife’s attempts to rescue him.

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of Mark Lane at 6:04 a.m., where they discovered Bernier deceased on the first floor, according to Fire Captain Edward Partridge. No other residents were harmed in the incident.

Authorities determined Bernier died from smoke inhalation and burns, and noted that the fire was likely intensified by three oxygen tanks in the apartment. Partridge said Bernier’s wife tried to reach him, but the rapidly spreading flames forced her to retreat.

The Waterbury Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
