Fatal Columbia County motorcycle crash death of Scott Gates – Obituary

Scott Gates, 27, of Augusta, died on New Year’s Eve after a motorcycle crash during a police pursuit in Columbia County, Georgia.

According to reports, Georgia State Patrol troopers attempted to stop Gates on Interstate 20 West near mile marker 196 for speeding. The motorcyclist continued westbound and later crossed into the eastbound lanes near mile marker 190. Troopers ended the pursuit shortly afterward, but later discovered the motorcycle engulfed in flames. Gates was pronounced dead at the scene; authorities said his injuries were so severe that he was unrecognizable.

Family and friends have expressed their grief online, with Gates’ mother sharing a tribute honoring his memory. Traffic on I-20 was delayed for about two hours as emergency responders attended to the crash.
