Fatal Hartselle, Alabama shooting death of Steven Eric McCulloch – Obituary

Steven Eric McCulloch, 34, of Hartselle, was killed Thursday afternoon in a shooting near his hometown.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded just before 2:45 p.m. to the 1100 block of Alabama Highway 36 east, where McCulloch was found with a gunshot wound. He was initially treated by medical personnel but was pronounced dead at 3:48 p.m.

Authorities arrested 67-year-old Roger Timothy Clayton, also of Hartselle, at the scene. Clayton faces pending murder charges. Investigators believe the shooting arose from an ongoing dispute between McCulloch and the suspect, describing it as an isolated incident.

Sheriff’s officials noted that deputies had previously separated the two individuals during a harassment call the day before, but the conflict escalated the following day. Traffic on Highway 36 has been rerouted via Perkins Wood Road and New Center Road while the investigation continues.
