Fatal Fountain Valley river death of Alejandra Ramirez Torres – Obituary

Alejandra Ramirez Torres, 39, was found dead in the Santa Ana River on New Year’s Day after being carried from Santa Ana to Fountain Valley, authorities confirmed. She had no known permanent residence.

Firefighters from Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, and the Orange County Fire Authority responded to reports of a person floating in the river near Warner Avenue in Santa Ana shortly before noon Thursday. Around 60 personnel combed the river and eventually located Torres in Fountain Valley, more than 1.5 miles downstream from where she was first spotted, near the 405 Freeway and north of the Gisler Avenue river trail in Costa Mesa.

Rescue teams faced challenges reaching her due to high fenced riverbanks, requiring a ladder truck to lower a worker in a rescue basket to the water. Torres was recovered but pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner officials later confirmed her identity, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department indicated she may have been transient. The exact cause of her death remains under investigation.
