Sheila Miller, 78, and her husband John Miller, 81, both of Omaha, lost their lives following a tragic two-vehicle collision Friday morning along Highway 77 near Wahoo, Nebraska. The crash was reported to the Saunders County 9-1-1 Center at about 7:09 a.m., occurring just north of the County Road H intersection, approximately three miles south of Wahoo.
According to the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office, both vehicles were traveling southbound when the incident occurred. A 2005 Ford Explorer driven by an 18-year-old from Wahoo struck the rear of a utility vehicle operated by John Miller.
John Miller was transported by ambulance to Saunders Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His wife and passenger, Sheila Miller, was taken to Bryan West Hospital in Lincoln. Despite medical efforts, she later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The teenage driver was also transported to Saunders Medical Center but was treated for minor injuries.
Highway 77 was closed in both directions for roughly three hours while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. Assistance was provided by Ceresco Fire and Rescue, Wahoo Fire and Rescue, the Wahoo Police Department, and the Nebraska State Patrol.
Authorities stated that the crash remains under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest distracted driving may have played a role. Seat belts were reportedly worn by all occupants, and alcohol is not believed to have been a contributing factor.
