Elvin Sanchez, 68, of Brooklyn, New York, was killed on New Year’s Day after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Linden Boulevard in East New York. Sanchez died from injuries sustained in the collision less than six hours after the crash.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 12:55 a.m. on January 1. A 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis, driven by 70-year-old Anselm Okeke, hit Sanchez as he crossed the street against a pedestrian signal. The driver briefly stopped but then fled the scene. Paramedics rushed Sanchez to Brookdale University Hospital, where he later died.

Neighbors described Sanchez as a kind and helpful man who had recently been grieving the loss of his wife. He often visited neighbors for meals and companionship, and the day of the crash, he had not yet made his usual visit, prompting concern from friends.

Police later arrested Okeke, who admitted to hitting Sanchez and leaving the scene because he “got scared.” Okeke was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and was released without bail pending further court proceedings.
