Fatal Long Beach hit-and-run deaths of Bobbi Smith and Gilberto Lopez – Obituary

Bobbi Smith, 24, and Gilberto Lopez, 21, were killed in a multi-vehicle hit-and-run collision Sunday night in Long Beach, California, authorities confirmed.

The crash occurred around 10:15 p.m. at the intersection of Sixth Street and Atlantic Avenue. Preliminary investigations by Long Beach Police suggest that an orange 2021 BMW 330i ran a red light while traveling eastbound on Sixth Street, striking a gray 2022 Nissan Altima traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue. The BMW then continued eastbound and collided with a black 2017 Kia Soul heading northbound.

Smith and Lopez, both passengers in the Nissan, were found unconscious—Smith in the roadway and Lopez on the sidewalk. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but both were pronounced dead by Long Beach Fire Department personnel.

The drivers of the Nissan and Kia, along with a front-seat passenger from the Nissan, sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and were transported to a hospital for treatment.

Officials noted that speed and failure to stop at a red light were being investigated as possible factors in the crash. Video from the scene showed the Nissan flipped onto its roof, with airbags deployed. Authorities continue to investigate the incident as a hit-and-run.
