Chris Scott Thomason, 42, of Bend, Oregon, was killed in a tragic avalanche Monday while snowmobiling near Castle Peak in Nevada County, California, authorities confirmed.
The fatal Truckee avalanche death of Chris Scott Thomason occurred in the afternoon as Thomason and four friends, all experienced snowmobilers, were returning from a backcountry trip that began in the Johnson Canyon area. Despite taking extensive safety precautions, including wearing avalanche beacons and protective gear, an avalanche was triggered on the backside of the mountain, burying Thomason.
His companions immediately tracked his beacon and began digging him out, administering CPR on site. Additional aid came from a group of three passersby, including an off-duty Truckee Fire medic, who helped continue emergency efforts. Despite their efforts, Thomason did not survive the incident.
All other individuals in the area were accounted for and unharmed. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to Thomason’s family and thanked the rescuers who assisted during the incident. Authorities emphasized the importance of avalanche awareness and emergency preparedness for backcountry activities.
