Fatal Fort Lauderdale car crash death of Johnnie Davis – Obituary
Johnnie Davis, 70, was killed Monday night after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene in Fort Lauderdale, according to police and family members.
The hit-and-run occurred around 8 p.m. on West Sunrise Boulevard near Northwest 5th Avenue. Fort Lauderdale Police said the driver involved did not stop and has not yet been identified. Authorities also have not released details about the vehicle involved.
Although police initially withheld the victim’s identity, relatives at the scene identified the man as Johnnie Davis. Family members arrived shortly after the crash, searching for information about what had happened.
Davis’ daughter, Jazzlynn Simmons, told reporters that the family lives across the street and had seen him about an hour before the incident. She said her own daughter later noticed a man lying in the roadway and went closer, only to realize it was her grandfather.
Simmons described her father as a man full of love and said the family is struggling to understand how someone could strike him and leave without stopping. She added that the loss is especially painful, coming just weeks after the death of her mother in November.
During the investigation, westbound traffic on West Sunrise Boulevard was diverted northbound onto North Andrews Avenue. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward as the investigation continues.
