Charles R. La Bedz, 57, of Steger, Illinois, lost his life Tuesday evening in a collision with a vehicle while crossing U.S. 41 near West Lincoln Highway in Schererville. Emergency responders pronounced La Bedz dead at the scene after the incident, which occurred around 5:55 p.m. on January 6, 2026.

Authorities report that La Bedz was walking across the southbound lanes of U.S. 41 when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed La Bedz’s identity later that evening, with family members positively identifying him. Due to the severity of the crash, the South Lake County Crash Reconstruction Team was called to investigate the scene.

The collision led to a closure of southbound U.S. 41 near the Walmart shopping area for several hours, creating substantial traffic disruptions. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.
