Edwin Webb, a 36-year-old resident of Athens, was identified as the man who lost his life in a fiery single-vehicle crash that occurred early Christmas morning in Athens-Clarke County. Authorities confirmed his identity on Wednesday after delays caused by severe fire damage at the scene.
Police said the crash was reported at approximately 5:53 a.m. on Dec. 25 at the intersection of Barnett Shoals Road and Gaines School Road. Investigators determined that Webb was driving a 2018 Toyota Camry at a high rate of speed when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree in the parking lot of a Synovus Bank.
