Hopkins, Minnesota Man Krystofer Patrick Brooks Arrested in Hennepin County for Deadly Shooting of Girlfriend
HOPKINS, MN — Krystofer Patrick Brooks, a 20-year-old resident of Hopkins, was arrested in Hennepin County in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred over the weekend at an apartment on the 1300 block of Cambridge Street.
According to the criminal complaint, Brooks was taken into custody after calling 911 on Saturday and reporting that he had shot his girlfriend of two years. First responders arrived at the scene and found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Court documents state that Brooks told police the shooting happened while he was attempting to clear his firearm. He said he had been following what he described as his normal routine to ensure the gun was unloaded, including checking the chamber and pulling the trigger multiple times. Investigators say Brooks claimed the gun discharged when he pulled the trigger again after turning toward the victim as she sat up in bed.
Authorities noted that Brooks told police he had loaded a magazine into the gun the night before after hearing gunfire outside the apartment and had taken a THC edible. He said he was unsure whether he had removed the magazine before the shooting.
Brooks was transported to the Hennepin County Jail, where he remains in custody on $500,000 bond. He is facing one count of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree manslaughter. His first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
