Stephen LaPorta, a Uxbridge police officer, lost his life early Wednesday morning, January 7, after a deadly traffic crash occurred while he was performing his duties. Stephen LaPorta was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident, despite immediate emergency medical efforts.

The collision happened at approximately 12:40 a.m. as LaPorta was assisting a motorist along an icy stretch of roadway. Authorities said weather conditions were extremely hazardous, with overnight police radio reports describing roads as dangerously slick and comparable to an ice rink, causing several responding cruisers to slide while heading to other accidents.

LaPorta, 43, had been serving as a full-time officer since June 2024 and brought more than ten years of experience in public safety to the department. At the time of the crash, he was actively helping a stranded driver when the fatal impact occurred.

Uxbridge Police Chief Marc Montminy released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss, calling it a heartbreaking moment for both the department and the town. He extended condolences to LaPorta’s family, friends, and fellow officers during what he described as an extremely painful time.

Following the incident, a solemn escort of police vehicles accompanied LaPorta’s body from the crash site. In honor of his service, the Uxbridge Police Department lowered its flags to half-staff and placed black bunting across the entrance of the station.

The Massachusetts State Police have taken over the investigation into the crash. A portion of Route 145 remained closed for several hours Wednesday morning as investigators worked to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
