Authorities are investigating the death of Anthony Mickens, an inmate at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility who was found unresponsive in his cell and later died at a hospital.

According to Chief Donta Miller of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, correctional officers discovered Mickens during routine rounds Wednesday night. Jail staff and medical personnel immediately entered the cell and began lifesaving measures while contacting Emergency Medical Services.

Mickens was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family has been notified of his passing.

Following standard protocol, the Texas Rangers have been called in to conduct an independent investigation, while the facility is also reviewing the circumstances internally.
