Authorities reported that Montiero and his cousin were struck by a driver who lost control while attempting to avoid another vehicle. Montiero was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends remember him as generous and always willing to help, with one longtime friend describing him as “one call away” for anyone in need.

Investigators noted that excessive speed was not a factor in the crash, though the area’s speed limit is 60 mph. The narrow shoulder lane where the incident occurred has been highlighted as a safety concern.
