Fatal Manhattan police shooting death of Dmitriy Zass – Obituary
Dmitriy Zass, a 37-year-old man from Great Kills, Staten Island, was fatally shot by police Thursday night in Manhattan after allegedly pointing what appeared to be a firearm at officers. NYPD officials reported that the incident occurred around 10:53 p.m. near Bedford Street and 6th Avenue.
Police said they were approached by two individuals who had been involved in a minor vehicle collision with a BMW that attempted to flee. When officers approached the BMW, Zass allegedly stepped out and pointed a gun at them. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, he did not comply, prompting officers to fire.
Zass was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead at 11:17 p.m. The “firearm” was later identified as a Sig Sauer air pistol. The two officers involved were evaluated at a hospital, and the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is conducting a full review of the shooting.
