Jordan Deaton, a 27-year-old resident of Des Moines, was killed early Thursday morning following a single-vehicle crash on the city’s east side, according to police.

The incident happened shortly after midnight near the intersection of East 14th Street and East University Avenue, close to Hiatt Middle School. Authorities said officers attempted a traffic stop near 21st Street and Atkins Street, but the driver fled and continued eastbound on University Avenue at a high rate of speed.

Police reported that Deaton lost control of the vehicle during the pursuit. The car left the roadway and struck a tree, causing fatal injuries. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Deaton was pronounced dead there.

Officials noted that this crash marks Des Moines’ first traffic-related fatality of the year. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under review as part of the ongoing investigation.
